Not everyone was delighted that the Work, Health and Safety Act and Regulations were changed, placing yet another obligation on businesses. Business people have more than enough compliance work to do, but compliance demands systems and our work, health and safety experience suggests that improved systems will provide unexpected benefits.
Simply, the Harmonisation Laws have placed another significant burden on businesses. Not only do they have to effectively start again and rewrite any program, any training, any procedure, any SWMS, but they also need to re-induct everyone in the business, as well as other responsibilities to deal with, like the Regulator (Any trained Union Official).
There would not be a business writer that has not at some point observed that business is a process that will survive, only with the application of systems. That old cliché about re-inventing the wheel is actually what we do if we do not systemise. The elimination of unnecessary, inefficient or dangerous practices will provide a significant business benefit.
The introduction of consumption taxes (GST) resulted in many better accounting and record keeping systems. Not totally a bad thing!We at Safety Work Consultancy draw a parallel with work, health and safety, as that Legislation demands that we implement systems to identify and remedy workplace risks to health and safety, not just for your staff, but for you, your clients and visitors. The expectation we have from our experience is that when systems are improved, business improves. Better Systems, Greater Rewards! Of course I may be preaching to the converted and you already have excellent systems, so in that case, the only benefit you will derive from compliance, will be to save the prospect of huge fines and perhaps a term of jail.
WH&S Law is a fact and it will increasingly be monitored. The Public Service Initiative to reduce workplace injuries by 40% will be followed, we can assume, by closer monitoring of business workplace compliance.
